UYUNI - City of Dust, Food Poisonings, and Gateway to the Salt Flats

Published on Anja Tags: Uyuni

Accommodation

We stayed at the "Hostal sin Fronteras". The room cost 53 US dollars or 369 Bolivianos for two days. We extended our stay by another night so Pascal could rest better, and we found the accommodation quite pleasant. A super delicious breakfast (including fresh juice, egg, cereal, …), an interesting view, and warm water made it quite bearable in Uyuni. :)

SIM Card

I had our SIM cards easily unlocked again at the ENTEL Multicentro.

Attractions

Besides the Train Cemetery, I also visited the Plaza de Armas and the Plaza de Aniceto Arce.

Transportation

Within the city, we walked everywhere, and on the last day, we took a taxi since we had a lot of luggage with us.

Food and Drinks

We celebrated my birthday in the evening at the "Llama Café". While it looked very appealing, the food was kind of disappointing. However, I did have a really great juice there! We also went to the "Blue Moon", which was questionable in appearance but quite tasty. Unfortunately, the portions weren't very large. I had a menu once at noon, which was solid. And then there’s definitely "Memo's Coffee-Bistro", which was a visual treat as well as delicious. Highly recommended!

Plants and Animals

Only dogs and dust/trash/dirt.

Number of Germans in the City

Certainly a few...

Expenses

Not much, but I secretly bought a chocolate bar that Pascal doesn't know about… So don't tell!

Standard Market Offerings

Lots of salt stuff, "alpaca goods", ponchos, sunglasses, …

Laundry

We washed 2.53 kilograms of laundry for 38 Bolivianos. One kilogram cost 15 Bolivianos at the "Eco Bubble Lavandería".

Unsolvable Mysteries

How can such an important city look so shabby? And why can't they manage to process food safely? Many people we talked to during our trip got food poisoning in Uyuni.

Bus to Tupiza

We paid 40 Bolivianos per person for the trip from Uyuni to Tupiza. Our bus company was really questionable, and then they overbooked the bus… Not to mention the engine problems… We went uphill at what felt like 20 km/h with regular exploding noises…
